Nobody loses their hearing in one go

It goes quietly, over years, in small amounts you never notice at the time. A cup lifted to hear a shout. A ten-minute job started before the muffs went on. A pair of defenders left in the van because the cushions had gone hard and they weren't worth the bother any more.

That's the real failure mode. Not a product that isn't rated highly enough — a product that ends up on the bench instead of on your head.

Which is why we build around one question

Will you still be wearing this at four o'clock?

It's a harder standard than a number on a box. It means the clamp has to be firm enough to seal but not so tight you're counting the minutes. It means the cushions have to stay soft past month six. It means you have to be able to hear a colleague, a reversing alarm or a change in the machine without taking anything off.

Get that right and the protection works, because it's actually being worn. Get it wrong and the specification is irrelevant.

What we'll tell you that others won't

More attenuation is not automatically better. Over-protection makes speech and warning signals hard to pick up, and people compensate by breaking the seal. A correctly matched, properly worn 24 dB defender protects you far better than a 34 dB one you keep lifting off. Match the rating to your measured exposure — if you're on site, your employer's noise risk assessment should tell you what that is.

Published ratings are laboratory figures. SNR and NRR values are measured with a perfect seal on a test fixture. What you actually get depends on fit, and fit is affected by everything from spectacle arms to hat brims to how you've adjusted the headband. We publish the numbers because you need them to compare products. We explain their limits because you need that more.

Cushions are consumables. A hardened ear cushion costs you more protection than any spec difference between two competing products. Replacing them every six months is the cheapest upgrade in the whole category, and almost nobody mentions it.

None of this is difficult to say. It's just easier to sell a big number and stay quiet. We'd rather you bought the right thing once.

  • We back it for 90 days. Use it properly in the field, and if it doesn't perform, claim between day 60 and day 90. The conditions are strict and we've written them plainly on the 90-Day Trial page — read them before you buy, not after.
